I'll be traveling to Vienna and Bratislava with my Choir next Monday...I've heard it's started snowing?

So the problem is...I bought a pair of sneakers (cos I don't have a proper pair) to wear on the trip, the Choir wants the shoes to be thick and insulating.

My sneaker kind is something like this. The saleslady at the Sportslink shop told me those shoes were not made to have proper grip on icy/snowy ground. We will not be galloping off to climb mountains or anything like that, just normal traveling and walking, so by your reckoning, do you think I will slip easily on snowy ground in Vienna/Bratislava with those kind of sneakers?

Haha...thanks... :)

ps: posted this onto another community... :)

Hi everyone,
I am studying abroad currently in Vienna, living in the music university dorm. Tonight is Madame Butterfly, which I am excited about! I have to recommend the 'sport' which is attending the opera and getting standing room. It's really quite the experience.

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knew of good, yet inexpensive stuff to do on Sundays when a lot is closed but there are still a ton of tourists? Because those tourists must be here for a reason on Sundays, and I am looking for fun stuff to do, while the weather's getting colder, and we can't go hang out at the Donau much anymore.

Thanks! Talk to you all soon.

Looking for participants for photo project

Hi, I'm photographer from St.Petersburg, Russia. I'm going through the Europe right now, in august, for making my new project "Moscow-Lisbon" (temporary name). It'll be the big series of portraits of people from different European countries. So, I need models - people, whom I'll make pictures of in different cities and whos portraits then will be the exhibition.

This is absolutely free. There is no need in any experience and no need in anything else on the whole, exept the wish to be photographed =).

The shoot, as you wish, can be on the street or in cafe, or at home etc., alone or together.

After my back to Russia I'll send you your pictures. Certainly, I'll inform you when and where the exhibition will take place.

The shoot is colour-film.

You can see my projects here. You can read about me here.

Before I send this info in several LJ communities, now the way changed. Cities, where I have been those days:  Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Koeln, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussel.

Tomorrow, 7th of August, I'll be in Vienna for 1 day ONLY. If you want to take part in this project, e'mail me studio204(at)mail.ru - your phone-number and e-mail. Further we'll disscus the time and the place of shoot. I#m on road now, so the fastest way is to send me SMS to 007 906 2440656

I'll be grateful for spreading this information.

My dad might be moving to Vienna next year, and I was interested in finding out some information about the city for when I visit him, and I stumbled across this comm. :)

I was just wondering if anyone knows some fun places to go that are popular with young people (around 18-25), such as clubs or bars, or special interest-related places (preferably geeky/nerdy ^^).

I'm also interested in where to find some queer bars/clubs, preferably with a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. ^__^

Oh, and I was hoping to find an online community with young people who live in Vienna, but can't seem to find any on Livejournal. Does anyone know of a community like this? (again, preferably young people with geeky/quirky interests, like fanfiction, books, anime, etc...)

Thanks so much for your help!

Need your help!

I am a student of the University of Leipzig, Germany. I found your group because some friends and I did an online-survey on memory, politics and events. It would be great if people from all over the worlds could fill in the survey.
You can find the survey at www.globus05.net in 13 differnet languages!

Thank you so much for your help! If you know someone who could be interested in this survey just forward him or her the link.

Danke wieder.

If anyone lives in Austria, I'm looking for photos of two apartment buildings in austria. I had family living there before and during WWII.

This might seem like a silly question, but here it is anyway:

I'm heading to Italy on Wednesday and need to get to the airport. I've traveled there once before on the S7, so I know where to go and how to get there...but if you are leaving from Vienna do you need a ticket?

My brother and I went to the airport on the S7 and we showed the guy our weekly tickets from Vienna and he accepted them. However, on the way back Mike was fined. I guess he didn't notice me or just liked me better. ;)

I know the airport isn't in Vienna so we should have thought to buy a different ticket on the way back. But since the S7 takes you out of Vienna does your ticket work all the way to the airport? Like I said, it's probably a silly question, but I'm still getting used to the whole train system deal and don't feel like paying a fine. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it!

Just a couple links
We were given a business card the other day which was for the Vienna expats community. Not sure if it's bad or good, but figured I should post it here anyway. It's at least a place for native English speakers to ask and answer questions.

Vienna expats

Also, I started taking German classes at Deutsch Akademie. Everyone I've talked to says it has a good reputation and so far I've really enjoyed my classes. So I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn German in Vienna.

so basic info
just to get some info in here i'll start by posting all that i can think of at the moment. if anyone wants to add to this list, feel free.

General Info

  • Alphaville - Original Version movies from the world over. all DVDs are in their original region, meaning they can only be used on native players. they also rent DVD players that can play these.
  • ÖTicket - conert sales for vienna. Not in English (until ordering i believing)
  • English Cinema Haydn - Original English Theatre in the 6th District
  • Artis Kino (no link) - in the first district, also an English Theatre. a 5 minute walk from Stephansplatz.
  • Burg Cinema another Original Version Cinema (so some may also be in other languages). 1st district on the ring.
  • Schikaneder - alternative bar/theatre that shows original version movies. sorry webpage not in english. don't expect popcorn here ;)
  • PickWick's - movie rentals/bar/cafe
  • Musical Vienna - musicals currently playing in Vienna, which generally amounts to 2 running at any given time.
  • Porgy & Bess - a nice Jazz club.

Shopping Essentials
  • Bobby's British Store - lots of imported food items that can't be found elsewhere. although they carry many items from the Britain and the US they're also a bit pricey. be careful as some things can also be found in grocery stores in Austria.
  • Julius Meinl - a store in the 1st district with lots of exotic (to Austria) foods and drinks.
  • The following stores are open 7 days a week and 365 days a year, and they no longer have to cage up certain items on Sunday:
    • Billa at Prater (2nd District - U1 - Prater)
    • Billa at Airport (Schwechat)
    • as well as many gas stations and shops at specific Train Stations (Westbahnhof, Landstrasse, Franz Joseph Bahnhof)

also, when shopping, if you can't find what you're looking for, try the larger grocery stores. they'll often carry things that can't be found so easily in smaller shops. For example, Cranberry Juice, Dr. Pepper, Pecans, etc.

i'm sure there's a ton more than that but i'm out of stuff for the moment. feel free to comment and i'll add any suggestions. i know there's also a few restaurants and bars that are either british or american, which could be added (excluding McDonalds and Burger King).
